Sashadhar Mukherjee, who began his career with Bombay Talkies of and later became co-owner Filmistan Sudios, Goregaon, is credited with helping many new talents rise to stardom like Sadhana , Asha Parekh and many others. He also helped Dev Anand , Shammi Kapoor, director Nasir Hussain and R. K. Nayyar to further their career in films. In 1950s he independently established Filmalaya Studios in Andheri. The notable feature of his film has been that most of them were musical hits like ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ (1957), Dil Deke Dekho(1959), ‘Ek Musafir Ek Hasina'(62), ‘Leader’ and ‘Aao Pyaar Karen'( both 1964).

Shammi Kapoor tasted success & stardom with the film as did Nasir Hussain as director. The film was liked for its plot and hit numbers like- ‘Sar Pe Topi Lal Haath Mein Resham Ka Rmaal O Tera Kya Kehna’, ‘Aayen Hain Door Se Milne Huzoor Se’, ‘Chupne Wale Samne Aa Chup Chupp Ke Mera Ji Na Jala’ & ‘Yun To Hune Lakh Haseen Dekhen Hain Tumsa Nahin Dekha’. Music score by O. P. Nayyar was the key factor in making the film a box office musical bonanza. Songs were rendered by Rafi & Asha Bhosle. The film also starred Pran, Raj Mehra & Anjali Devi. The film also had story & screenplay written by Nasir Hussain.

His “Ek Msafir Ek Hasina” (1962) featuring Sadhana & Joy Mukherjee was also well received as a musical hit with songs like-‘Aap Yun Hi Agar Humse Milte Rahe’, ‘Main Pyar Ka Rahi Hoon, Bahut Shukriya Badi Meherbani’ , ‘Humko Tumhare Ishq Ne’ to mention few.

‘Tere Husn Ki Kya Tareef Karoon’, ‘Mujhe Duniyawalo Sharabi Na Samho” & “Ek Shahenshah Ne Banwake Haseen Tajmahal” were other hits from “Leader” (1964) starring Dilip Kumar, Vyjanthimala & Jayant. ‘Paying Guest’ & ‘Love in Simla’ were his other notable films.

His “Jagriti” (1956), directed by Satyen Bose won Filmfare Award for Best Film. His earlier films included ‘Bandhan’ and ‘Jhoola’ produced in early 1940s. His brother Subodh Mukherjee himself was a well known director. Joy, Deb and Shomu Mukherjee were his sons, the last being married to actress Tanuja.
