Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, who was involved in the anti-Sikh riots, has been declared guilty by the Rouse Avenue Court of Delhi today. He had earlier been evading arrest. It is alleged that Sajjan Kumar was leading the mob during the riots and on his instigation, the mob burnt alive Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh, both residents of Saraswati Vihar, and looted their household property. Since the Congress government was in power at that time, he kept escaping trial. According to sources, Sajjan Kumar was charged under Section 147/148/149/302/308/323/395/397/427/436/440 of the IPC

The riots were allegedly sponsored and took place all over the country. The number of non-governmental deaths was many times greater than around 3500 stated by the then ruling Congress government. After the riots, a large number of Sikhs were displaced and reached Mohali and other cities and towns of Punjab.

Special judge Kaveri Baweja of Rouse Avenue Courts will hear the arguments relating to quantum of punishment on February 18.
