On Her 88th Birth Anniversary
Mala Sinha, one of the most popular actresses of 1950s, 1960s & 1970s was born to Nepali parents in Calcutta, now renamed Kolkata also called ‘City of Joy’. Mala Sinha was lucky enough to get recognition & taste stardom when she was cast in Yash Chopra’s debut film”, Dhool Ka Phool” opposite Rajendra Kumar, a musical hit film based on a hitherto taboo subject -illegitimacy. In 1957 she was cast in Guru Dutt’s “Pyaasa” playing Meena his ex-girlfriend with heart rendering songs like “Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Lagalo”, “Jaane Kya Tune Kahi”, “Ye Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaye” and ” Jaane Woh Kaise Log The” to mention few.”Pyaasa’ is considered a ‘classic’ and one of the most talked about film.
Said to be the highest paid actress in early 1960s, sharing the screen with Vyjayanthimala, she worked in several successful Bengali flms with veteran actor Uttam Kumar. Her coquettish shyness, as she revealed at a point in a ” Parvarish “song “Masti Bhara Hai Sama” with Raj Kapoor was too bewitching .Naturally, therefore, the actress went on to become a darling of millions of cinegoers in the films that followed. In “Anpadh” she played an illiterate wife opposite Dharmendra, then a newcomer, another masterpiece.
