Ajit Khan started his film career as a Hero & worked in several films. I watched him first in “Baraat” then a student. I went to watch the film at Defence cinema, West Patel Nagar with my father. “Halaku”, “Shikari” & “Naya Daur” were other films of the actor I was lucky to see. He featured in “Mughal-E-Azam”(1960) playing an important role siding with Saleem against Akbar. He later switched to villainy & became more popular in films released in 1970s.

“Dharma” was one of his popular films starring Pran & Bindu. Some of his dialogue became popular like “Lilly Don’t Be Silly”. I remember two of his later films “Dharma” & “Kalicharan” seen at Allahabad & Varanasi respectively. Suraj, Aadmi Aur Insaan, Prince, Andaz & Lal Patthar are some of his other films I remember.

The actor looked off color when I visited him in 1985. His film “Phansi Ke Baad” was awaiting release. He disappeared from the film scene for years. I do not remember having seen any of his films towards the fag end of his film career.

Born Hamid Ali Khan into a Muslim family, Ajit ruled the roost as Ajit (1945-1995) appearing predominantly as a villain in most films in & after 1970s.
