Kavita Krishnamurthy rose to prominence with 1985 Mithun-Padmini Kolhapure starrer “Pyaar Jhukta Nahin” singing “Tumse Milkar Na Jane Kyu, Or Bhi Kuchh Yaad Aata Hai” followed by another sizzling number “Kahate Hai Mujhko Haea Hawaii” picturized on seductress Sridevi in film “Mr. India” ( 1987) also featuring Anil Kapoor under the baton Laxmikant -Pyarelal.

Rising on the crest of success, & afresh from fame & recognition she got, Kavita Krishnamurthy had many more surprises in store for cine-goers like- “Tu Chiz Badi Hai Mast Mast Tu Chiz Badi Hai Mast” a duet with Udit Narayan from 1994 film “Mohra” & “Bole Chudiya Bole Kangna” with Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnic & Amit Kumar from Amitabh-Shahrukh Khan starrer “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” (2001). She remained in the LKPL camp for many years, rubbing shoulders with the leading singers of her time.

The singer has reportedly recorded more than 25000 songs in 16 languages including many in Kannada, Bengali, Gujrati, Malayalam, Tamil, Nepali & Konkani & other regional languages. “Pyar Hua Chupke Se” ( 1994) from ‘1942: A Love Story’ & “Mera Piya Ghar Aaya, O Ram Ji” picturized on Madhuri Dixit from film “Yaraana” ( 1995) were her other most popular songs. She rendered her voice to classical, semi-classical, romantic, pop, ghazal & qawwali with awe. She was recipient of Padma Shri ( 2005) and four Filmfare Awards for Best Playback for – “Pyaar Hua Chupke Se”, “Mera Piya Ghar Aaya” (Yaraana),– “Aaj Main Upar” (Khamoshi: The Musical) & – “Dola Re Dola” (Devdas). Toured several country as a singer including United Kingdom & USA.

I met & interviewed the singer for ‘Patriot’ New Delhi in 1990.

Born Sharada to T. S. Krishnamurthy in a Tamil Iyer family in New Delhi on 25 January in 1958.
