बरसता है जो आँखों से
वह सावन याद करता है
बेदर्दी बालमा तुझको
मेरा मन याद करता है

A Gold medalist in Sanskrit and Persian from the University of Punjab & also Editor of Daily Milaap, Ramanand Sagar shifted to Bombay where he did odd jobs to earn a livelihood before he got in touch with Prithviraj Kapoor & subsequently wrote the story & screenplay of Raj Kapoor’s super-hit movie “Barsaat” ( 1949) starring Nargis, Nimmi Cuckoo & Prem Nath.

Ramanand Sagar is known to most movie buffs, especilly the younger generation, for TV serial “Ramayan” (1987). The success of the serial was astounding and created history. Roads were deserted when the serial was showing.

He also wrote the story of Dilip Kumar- Raj Kumar starrer “Paigham” (1959). One of his hit film was “Aankhen” starring Dharmendra, Mala Sinha & Kumukum. He had earlier directed Sadhna & Rajendra Kumar starrer “Arzoo” with many a hit number to boast. Both the films were hits & liked by the audience. He also directed “Ghunghat” (1960), “Geet”, “Prem Bandhan” & “Charas”. Sagar repeated Dharmendra, Mala Sinha & Kumkum in his films. His “Arzoo” was at its emotional Best with a song “Bedari Balma Tujhko Mera Man Yaad Karta Hai”.

He was wonderful as dialogue writer of “Paigham” & wrote dialogue & screenplay of 1952 film “Sangdil”. Also wrote dialogue & screenplay for 1964 hit film “Raj Kumar” starring Shammi Kapoor & Sadhna.

“Ramayan” created history when it was retelecast. It also made others to try their luck on #small screen. “B. R. Chopra made “Mahabharat”. It was another successful serial.

I met Ramanand Sagar twice during the making of “Ramayan” and discussed about his life, failures & successes. He was too straightforward in replying to my questions.

Won Filmfare Best Dialogue Award for ‘Paigham’ & Best Director Award for ‘Aankhen’ (1969).

Born this day in Lahore in 1917.
