On His Birth Anniversary

Vijay Arora & Reena Roy both debuted with B. R.Ishara’s “Zaroorat” ( 1972 ).The film was publicized as a sex-oriented film which brought the upcoming starlet into instant limelight. The film begins when a taxi driver finds two men molesting a young girl at a secluded place. He offers his shirt to the victim and makes the goons run away. He later drops the girl to her home. The girl Reena Roy was publicized as ‘Zaroorat Girl’ & this tag remained attached to her for years until she eventually changed her image to a homely and talented actress. His hero in the film was Vijay Arora, a handsome lad then in his late twenties.

I met the actor along with my wife & daughter in 1982 at his flat in a society adjacent to Hotel Centaur, Juhu. I asked him questions about his early struggle & how he did achieve success in films. I also asked questions about his relations with his heroines and producers. I later met him during the making of “Ramayana” and also in 1990 during cock-tail dinner of a film launching at Holiday Inn, Juhu. Arora married Dilber Debara, a former model and Miss India.

Vijay Arora graced the small screen in “Vikram Aur Baitaal”( 1986) & “Bharat Ek Khoj” ( 1988). Ramanand Sagar’s epic tele serial “Ramayan” added to his popularity: he played Meghnad (Indrajit) & became a houehold name. The serial made people glued to television screens during its screening. The roads were deserted and things came to a halt.
