On His Death Anniversary

Dev Anand enjoyed a wonderful chemistry with Guru Dutt. They decided to help each other & later did so in life. Dev played the lead in suspense drama “C.I.D.”(1956) starring Shakila & Waheeda Rehman with hits like “Leke pehla Phla Pyaar” & “Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein Ishara Ho Gaya” under the music score O. P. Nayyar and later went on to do “Bombay Ka Babu”, “Hum Dono”, “Jab Pya Kisi Se Hota Hai”, “Asli Naqli”, “Guide”, “Jewel Thief” , “Johny Mera Naam” & “Hare Rama hare Krishna”.
Known for his love for many leading ladies of his time. Dev worked with ‘Dream Girl’ Hema Malini in “Johny Mera Naam” (1970), “Joshila” (1973), “Shareef Budmaash (1973)”, “Chhupa Rustam” (1973) & “Amir Garib” (1974). Hema Malini rose to starry heights after her pairing with the actor in Johny Mera Naam. Introduced Shatrughan Sinha, Zahida, Tabbu & several others. Married Kalpana Kartik in 1954 & was blessed with two children, including Suneil Anand.
Guide (1965), directed by Vijay Anand was a masterpiece. The film starred Waheeda Rehman & Kishore Sahu with many a touching song like- Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai, Gaata rahe Mera Dil & Din Dhal Jaye haye Raan Na Jaye to name few. The film, naturally, therefore won 8 Filmfare Awards out of 10 nominations.
Remembered for his many musical hits like -‘Pal Bhar Ke Liye Koi Hume’,’Shokhiyon Mein Ghola Jaye’, ‘Likha Hai Teri Ankhon Mein’, ‘Chhod Do Aanchal Zamana Kya Kahega’, ‘Dekho Rootha Na Karo’, ‘Ye Raat Ye Chandni Phir Kahan’, ‘Cheda Mere Dil Ne tarana tere Paar Ka’, ‘Ankhon Hi Ankhon Mein’, ‘Tujhe Jeevan Ki Dor Se’, ‘Are Yaar Meri Tum Bhi Ho Ghazab’, ‘Churi Nahin Yeh Mera Dil Hai’, ‘Sau Saal Pahle’, ‘Pal Bhar Ke Liye’, ‘Shokhiyon Mein Ghola Jaye’, ‘Likha Hai Teri Ankhon Mein’, ‘Dekho Rootha Na Karo’,’ Gaata Rahe Mera Dil’, & “Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai’ to mention select few.
Part of the Anand family, he co-founded Navketan Films in 1949 with his elder brother Chetan Anand. He worked opposite Suraiya, the lady he loved, in half a dozen movies. Nutan, Waheeda Rehman and Geeta Bali were others who were close to him.
I met him twice. I Spent many hours with him during the shooting of “Return of Jewel Thief” in 1995. I also met his younger brother, known director of many hits- Vijay Anand.
Bestowed with Dadashaeb Phalke Award, Padma Bhushan, National Film Award for Best Feature Film’Guide’ , Filmfare Awards For Best Actor “Kala Pani”, & “Guide” besides Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
