On His Birth Anniversary

Born in a Sikh family as Sampooran Singh Kalra,the renowned lyricist & screenplay writer Gulzar started his career as a lyricist in film “Bandini” starring Nutan, Dharmendra, Ashok Kumar, Tarun Bose & Asit Sen with song “Moraa Goraa Ang Lai Le, Mohe Shaam Rang Dai De” under the music score S .D. Burman. All other songs of the film were written by Shailendra.
There was no looking back for the lad as he went on climbing the ladder to success in various sinews of filmmaking- as director, screenplay writer & lyricist. He directed many films including hits like ‘Mere Apne’ (1971) ‘Parichay’ and Koshish’ (972) ‘Mausam’ & ‘Aandhi” (1975) & “(1996), to mention few.
As a lyricist he created many a gem like-‘Musafir Hoon Yaaro Na Ghar Hai Na Thikana’ & ‘Biti Na Bitaai Rainaa'(Parichay).’Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi, Shikavaa To Nahin’, ‘Is Mod Se Jaate Hai, Kuchh Sust Kadam Raste, Tum Aa Gaye Ho Nur Aa Gayaa Hai (Aandhi) & ‘Dil Dhundhta Hai Fir Wahi Fursat Ke Raat Din’ & ‘Ruke Ruke Se Kadam Ruk Ke Baar Baar Chale’ (Mausam).He also penned lyrics of films like – ‘Thodisi Bewafaii’, ‘Chachi 420’, ‘Lekin’, ‘Rudaali’, ‘Maya Memsaab’ & ‘Maachis’ to mention few.
