Like many South Indian actresses, Rekha was dark complexioned in appearance and was often frowned upon by her co stars. Some of them even made a mockery of her when she was a non entity. Surprisingly, the same lady became everyone’s beloved in later years. Rekha made her debut with “Sawan Bhadon” in 1970 opposite another newcomer Navin Nischol with iftekhar, Shyama & Ranjeet . The film was directed by Mohan Segal with photography done by Baldev Singh. It was a huge box office success. ‘Kahani Kismat Ki’, ‘Dharma’ & ‘Namak Haraam’ helped her gain recognition. There was no looking back as her career progressed slowly though steadily. “Dharmatama”, “Khoon Pasina”, “Khubsoorat”, “Umrao Jaan” , “Silsila” & “Judaai” did the rest. Received phenomenal adoration from fans and colleagues. Remained active until 2018. Bestowed with several accolades including National & Filmfare Awards for Best Actress. Made her debut as a child artist in a Telugu film in 1958. Born Bhanurekha Ganesan on 10 October 1954 in Madras, Tamil Nadu.
