With the success of some of the Indian babes at various International Beauty Pageants beginning with Sushmita Sen & Aishwarya Rai, the Cannes, a city situated on the French Riviera, seems to have become a hub for aspiring Indian actresses & models. The Indian film contingent was the largest to attend the 76th Cannes Film Festival held this year comprising of Aishwarya Rai, Mouni Roy, Manushi Chillar, Mrunal Thakur, Urvashi Rautela, Diana Penty, Anushka Sharma, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sara Ali Khan & Esha Gupta to bewitch the viewers & delegates at Cannes 2023 extravaganza. The 76th annual Cannes Film Festival was held between 16 to 27 May 2023. French film ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, a thriller directed by Justine Triet won the Palme d’Or. She is the third lady director to win the coveted award. Now Read the Concluding part.

Another of Cannes’ spectacular festivals is the “Battle of Flowers”. The flowers are shown with gay abandon by precocious flower girls. Roses, lillies, mimosa, marigold & tulips are cultivated in Cannes-mostly for the “Battle of Flowers” & other festivals.

Right from the opening of the festival followed by arrival of celebrities who walk on the red carpet displaying their wares thereby adding grandeur to the festival, Cannes remains a dazzling panorama.

The city boasts of many a top-class luxury hotels like- Hotel Le Romanesque, Hotel La Villa Cannes, Hotel Ermitage de l’Oasis, Hotel Cannes Croisette & Hotel Barriere Le Majestic. from a tourist’s perspective, Cannes looks much the same as it did in the 1980s, much the same as the Taj Mahal in Agra , the Red Fort in Delhi & the Trafalgar Square in London did in the 1970s, although few new establishments have definitely sprung up over the years at & around the place.

Like other seaside towns, Cannes comes live as the sun sets. The city offers a variety of nightly entertainment options ranging from rooftop bars to titillating cabarets at many a local nightspot like -‘Chrystie’, a late night cabaret bar with live buzzing music to add, ‘Morrison’s Lounge’ & Baoli Restaurant including few Nightclubs. The main shopping street at Cannes is known as Rue d’ Antibes.

For fun-seekers there were many cabarets & casinos at Cannes earlier in 1980s & 1990s like ‘Busbys Lord’, ‘Club Bali Bali’, ‘Roxy Club’ & “Le Charleston” to mention few. “Play Girl” situated at 90 Rue Meynadict, held shows followed by dance & dinner. “Palm Beach Casino” offered international entertainers; and was choicest of many visitors. “Casino des Fleurs” also featured concerts, dancing & variety shows. I presume some of these joints still exist at Cannes.

During the festival, two Honorary Palme d’Or were awarded to Michael Douglas & Harrison Ford for their contribution to cinema. Showman Raj Kapoor was also a two-time nominee for the Palme d’Or grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his films ‘Awaara’ (1951) and ‘Boot Polish’ (1954).
