The year 1963 saw the release of many hits like-Mere mehboob,Taj Mahal, Gumrah, Dil Ek Mandir, Tere Ghar Ke Saamne, Shikari, Mujhe Jeene Do, Gehra Daag, Bandini, & Grahasti. “Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon”,the subject of this write up was the Fourth Highest Grossing film of the year 1963.The film starred Joy Mukherjee, Asha Parekh, Rajendranath, Pran,Wasti, Krishna Dhawan & Tabassum.

Jamuna (played by actress Veena) is the key figure in this film who owing to marital disagreement with her husband leaves his house. Her husband does not permit her to take away their son. Jamuna successfully arranges his abduction & they begin to live separately. Jamuna’s son Mohan ( Joy Mukherjee)) grows into a tall, handsome youth and gets a job at a monthly salary of rupee 300. Mohan falls in love with Mona (Asha Parekh) whose guardian wants her to marry Difu, a foreign returned clown type guy (Rajendra Nath) against her wish.

Mona and her friends are on on a trip to Srinagar. Mohan follows them.

In between the story takes a twist when Jamuna’s husband announces the return of his son Ramesh, an imposter played by Pran. Jamuna gets a shock of her lifetime. Ramesh sets her eyes on Mona & wants to trap her. Rest is what makes an interesting story how Mohan & Mona unite.

The film had music score by O. P. Nayyar with lyrics penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri with some of the hit numbers like-“Banda Parwar Tham Lo Jigar”, “Lakhon Hai Nigah Mein”, “Aanchal Mein Saja Lena” & “Aankhon Se Jo Utri Hai Dil Mein” to mention some. The film was produced & directed by Nasir Husain who had earlier given hits like “Tumsa Nahi Dekha” (1957) & “Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai” (1961) also as director. The film was shot in Delhi, Kashmir & Bombay.

The film under reference grossed 1 crore 50 lakh when the Gold price was 140 per 10 grams & if considered with the current value of Gold, it comes about a whopping 400 crore with adjustments. It would indeed be much more if the cost of Agricultural Land per Acre was taken into account which increased from rupee 500 in 1960s to between 50 Lakh to 3 Crore on an average at different locations in India in 2023.
