The modern jet-set age could only be possible because of various researches carried out and inventions done by scientists all over the world for the mankind. It is worth mentioning that most of them did not or could not themselves enjoy the fruits of their hard labour. Inventions like telephone, aircraft, penicillin, automobiles, telegraph and in the modern times mobiles, computers, and other handy gadgets we use at home have come to us only because of someone else’s perseverance. The Scientists under reference is an American known as Carl Pauling, also an author and peace-activist.

Born 28 February 1901 at Portland, Oregon , a coastal U. S. State known for its diverse landscape of forests, mountains, farms and beaches, Carl Pauling was a scientist who was known for his quest which later became a passion. A passion to do something for the mankind for ages to remember and cherish. He widened his area of research unfolding new things in various fields including quantum chemistry, inorganic and organic chemistry, metallurgy, immunology, anesthesiology, psychology, radioactive disintegration and others, hitherto unknown to the world.
On 13 January 1958, American Biochemist Linus Pauling and his wife presented to the United Nations Organization a letter signed by more than 11000 scientists from all over the world asking for the suspension of The Nuclear tests.

Public opinion and pressure from various quarters led to a moratorium on surface tests, followed by the signing of the partial nuclear test ban treaty signed by 113 countries, on August 5th 1963. Among the signatories, were john f. Kennedy, United States, and Nikita Khrushchev Soviet Union.
The Treaty came into force on 10 October of that year and Pauling received the Nobel Peace prize that same day although it had been awarded in 1962. Interestingly, Pauling had already received his first Nobel in 1954 for his research in chemistry which he described the nature of chemical links.

Thus, Pauling became one of the only two person to win the Nobel Prize in two different subjects. The other recipient is Marie Curie who won 2 in Physics ( 1903 ) and in Chemistry .
