Parvarish-1958

Prabodh Chandra Dey, born at Calcutta was an acclaimed and renowned Indian playback singer, music director, and a musician who mastered classical music & rendered some of the most difficult songs with ease & aplomb, especially some of the Punjabi ‘shabads’ like- ‘Bissar Gayi Sab Tat Parayi’, ‘Guran Ik Deh Bujhai’ (Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai) & ‘Hum Maile Tum Ujjal Karte’ under the music score S. Mohinder in film “Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai” (1969). Indeed, a delight to the ears & the soul.

In 1958 film “Parvarish” starring Raj Kapoor & Mala Sinha Manna Dey and Lata seemed to have been in a rapturous mood, both emotionally as well as romantically, singing ‘Neeli Aankh Mila Lo Jee, Dil Main Aaj Chupa Lo Jee’ composed under the baton Dutta Ram. One of my favorite numbers.

“Pyar Hua Iqrar Hua” ( Shree 420), “Yeh Raat Bheegi Bheegi” & “Aaja Sanam Madhur Chandni Men” (Chori Chori), “Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai” (Seema), “Poochho Na Kaise Maine” (Meri Surat Teri Ankhen), “Kaun Aaya Mere Man Ke Dware” (Dekh Kabira Roya), “Chalat Musafir Moh Liya Re” (Teesri Kasam) , “Aye Meri Zohra Zabeen, Tujhe Malum Nahi” (Waqt) & “Laga Chunari Mein Daag” from 1963 film (Dil Hi To Hai), ‘Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli’, (Anand), ‘Tum Bin Jeevan Kaisa Jeevan’ (Bawarchi) were some of his other hits including ‘Ek Chatur Naar Kar Ke ” was another of his classical hits.

Bestowed with Padma Shri by Government of India,1972 ,Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for ‘Mera Naam Joker’ & Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (2011).

Manna Dey started his film career as a music composer with “Tamannah” (942) starring Leela Desai, Karan Dewan & P. Jairaj. In “Jwar Bhata” he rendered one song. The film starred Dilip Kumar. Rose to prominence with “Awaara” (1951), “Do Bigha Zameen” (1953) & “Boot Polish” (1954).

Born this Day, 1919 in Calcutta.
