Bestowed with three consecutive Filmfare Awards for his lyrics – ‘Chaudvin Ka Chand Ho’- film “Chaudhvin Ka Chand” (1960), ‘Husnwale Tera Jawab Nahin’ – “Gharana” (1961) & ‘Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil’ – “Bees Saal Baad” (1962) in 1961,1962 & 1963, the renowned lyricist is remembered for Hits like- ‘Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya’ & ‘Teri Mehfil Me Kismat Azmakar Hum Bhi Dekhenge’- “Mughal-e-Azam” (1960), ‘Na Jao Saiyaan’ & ‘Sakhiya Aaj Mujhe Neend Nahin’- “Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam”(1962), ‘Lo Aa Gai Unki Yaad’ (Do Badan-66) , ‘Tumhe Paa Ke Hum Ne, Jhan Pa Liya hai’- “Gehra Daag-1963”, ‘Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki’ (Dulari-1949), ‘Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj’ & ‘O Duniya Ke Rakhwale (Baiju Bawra-1952), ‘Madhuban Me Radhika Naache Re’ (Kohinoor-1960) & ‘Mere Mehboob Tujhe Meri’- “Mere Mehboob”(1963), ‘Sharmake Yeh Kyun Sab Pardanasheen Aanchal Ko’ (Chaudvin Ka Chand) & ‘Aaj Purani Rahon Se Koi’ (Aadmi-1968) are some of the poetic gems created by him.

Shakeel teamed up with Naushad & they worked together in many hits like- Baiju Bawra, Deedar, Amar, Leader, Mela, Dil Diya Dard Liya, Dillagi, Dastan, Aadmi & Mughal-e-Azam to name some.

It would indeed be injustice if we did not mention “Insaaf Ki Dagar Pe” , a patriot song, rendered by Hemant Kumar from (Gunga Jumna-1961). He also worked with other music composers including Hemant Kumar in “Bees Saal Baad” & Ravi in “Chaudvin Ka Chand”.

Shakeel was inspired & influenced by the poetic excellence of one of his relatives which paved way for his becoming a renowned poet in the years that followed. His father helped him become conversant with Urdu, Persian & Arabic.

Born 3 August 1916, at Badaun, a district headquarter in UP with a population of about 1,62,000 the noted lyricist died on 20 April 1970, in Mumbai leaving behind a legacy of his poetic masterpieces.
