Mohammed Zahur Khayyam Hashmi was a well known India music composer who started his career as a singer with Zohrabai Ambalewali. Married to Jajit Kaur, a singer in her own right “Tum apna ranz o gham apni pareshani mujhe de do”(Shagoon) & “Saada chidiya da chamba ve” with Pamela Chopra (Kabhi Kabhie -1976) fame.
‘Lala Rukh’ (1958), ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’ (1961), ‘Shagoon’ (1964), ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ (1976), ‘Trishul’ (1978),’Noorie’ (1979) were some of his best films. ‘Bazaar E Husn’ (2014) was his last.
“Hazaar Rahen Mud Ke Dekhin” (Thodi Si Bewafai) & “Hai Kali kali Ke Lab Pe Tere Husn Ka Phasana”(Lala Rukh) were two of his hit numbers, though he composed many.
He won three Filmfare Awards: for Best Music in 1977 for ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ and 1982 for ‘Umrao Jaan’, and a lifetime achievement award in 2010.Also received Nomination for 4 other films. Bestowed with Padma Bhushan in 2011.
Born 18 February 1927 at Rahon, Punjab, the noted music director breathed his last on this Day in 2019 in Mumbai.
