Tabu Hashmi though started her career in Dev Anand’s ‘Hum Naujawan’ (1985) tasted stardom in “Vijaypath” (1994) opposite Ajay Devgan, once her neighbor & old friend also featuring Danny Denzongpa, Gulshan Grover & Reema Lagoo, receiving Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. The film had two popular numbers- “Ruk Ruk Ruk Arre Baba Ruk” & “Raah Mein Unse Mulaqat”.In between she played the lead in a Telugu movie titled “Coolie No. 1” opposite Venkatesh.
The year 1996 was most lucky as she went on to appear in many films including Gulzar’s “Maachis’ highlighting the events relating to insurgency in Punjab .Her performance earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress .”Saajan Chale Sasural” added to her popularity.
Comedy drama “Biwi No.1” & “Hu Tu Tu” (1999),”Astitva” (2000), and “Chandni Bar” (2001),directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, added another feathers into her cap. The last winning her second National Film Award (2003) for Best Actress. These films were liked and applauded by viewers and critics alike. She continued working down South hitting the ‘jackpot’ in blockbuster ‘Kandukondain Kandukondain’, starring Mammootty, Ajith Kumar and Aishwarya Rai. She also won IIFA Awards for “Chandni Bar” & “Haider”(2015).She won four Best Actress (Critics)Awards for Virasat,Hu Tu Tu, Astitva and Cheeni Kum. She was also Nominted for Best Actress Filmfare Award for “Andhdhun”(2018) starring Ayushmann Khurrana & Radhika Apte. Tabu played a negative role in the film which won Three National Film Awards & Four Filmfare Awards in 2019.Th film produced with a budget of 35 crore grossed 450 crore at Box Office.
“Drishyam” ( 2015) starring Ajay Devgan , Tabu & Shriya sran was another of her mentionable movie. She plays an Inspector General of police. My younger brother, Amarpal Noorpuri, was invited to meet the star cast of the film at Hotel Sun-n-Sand, Juhu lead by a team of Journalists from Punjab, before its release. After 1999,I had handed over the charge of visiting Bombay to my brother who is also a photo-journalist and has been dealing with Public Relations.
The actress is having a field day as 5 of her films are likely to be released this year including Vishal Bhardwaj’s “Khufia” with Tabu playing a Secret Agent & in a negative role of a Police Constable in “Kutte” also starring Arjun Kapoor & Konkana Sen Sharma in the lead and Tabu, Naseeruddin Shah in key roles. “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2” is also awaiting release.
Prem, Chachi 420,Biwi No.1,Kohram,Ghaath,Saathiya,Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Maqbool, Om Shanti Om, Golmaal Again, Maa Tujhe Salaam, & De De Pyaar De are some of her other films. She also appeared in a Web-Series titled ” A Suitable Boy (2020).
The actress dated South star Nagarjuna for over a decade but their marriage could not materialize as the star was already married twice. She continues to be a close friend of Kajol and Ajay Devgan. Bestowed with many accolades including Padma Shri (2011).
