Dara Singh, Indian wrestler,producer & actor born at Dharmuchak, Amritsar District is known for his simplicity sans arrogance .The noted wrestler rose to starry heights by his personal effort & perseverance to become Rustom-E- Hind and later battling with the then African Champ Prince Kumali & Lou Thesz of USA to become World Champ.
When I was five-year-old my father told me about one Jail Wala Dara Singh who visited Ferpzepore branch of the Imperial Bank of India for getting his monthly pension.He stood 7 foot and one of the clerks told my father about the boy standing outside. He was bailed out & subsequently set free in 1955 for charges of a murder. He later worked in few films.I knew the actor-wrestler Dara Singh at the age of 10 & saw his firs film in 1962 at Capital cinema , Ambala.I saw his many bouts at Patiala, Frozepur,Kanpur,Delhi & Bombay.
Visited Dara Villa five-six times ,visiting first in 1976 and later 1982,85 88 & during a party thereat. I also saw him wrestle with some masked and unmasked foreign wrestlers besides Tiger Joginder Singh & Saudagar Singh Live. His Best bout was seen at Delhi Stadium in early 1970s opposite Majid Akra or Akram Pahalwan of Pakistan.
I have been undergoing treatment for spinal cord and breathing and am not able to do work .Otherwise I could have made a comprehensive write -up on the occasion, coinciding as it is, with Guru Nanak Dev Birthday.
