Raveena Tondon, born to Ravi & Veena Tandon in Mumbai took to modelling as a hobby and later made it a profession along with acting. She debuted in ‘Patthar ke Phool’ , winning Filmfare Award of ‘Fresh face of the Year’. “Dilwale”, “Mohra”, “Laadla”, “Aatish”, & “Andaz Apna Apna” (1994), ‘Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi” (1996)& “Ziddi” (1997) were some of her successful films,the last two being declared super hits’. “Ziddi” starred Sunny Deol and it was directed by Guddu Dhanoa. It grossed 29 crore. “Dulhe Raja” (1998) ‘Ankhiyon Se Goli Mare’ starring Govinda was also a hit film.
She also proved her histrionics in films like “Shool” (1999), Bulandi (2000) and “Aks” (2001).These film wer positively received and she was praised and awarded.She won Best Actress National Award for “Daman-A Victim of Marital Violence”(2001).These films were parts of her second innings in films.
Some of the numbers picturised on her like “Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast” ( Mohra) & “Ankhiyon Se Goli Maare” were seductively nay titillatingly conceived and delighted the audience thereby adding to the film’s success. “Tip Tip Barsa Paani” – Akshay Kumar & Raveena Tandon was also of similar nature. However, the best sad number “Jeeta Tha Jiske Liye”(Dilwale-1994) was picturised on Ajay Devgan .
After a long break she was again featured in a thriller titled “Maatr” (2017). She and her daughter are gangraped. The latter dies while mother survives to avenge her death. The film stars Raveena ,Madhur Mittal & Divya Jagdale. Madhur Mittal plays the culprit who commits the crime with his friends. It was a box office hit. She also did a cameo in “Bombay Velvet” (2015).
I was present on the sets of her film “Andaz Apna Apna” (1992) being shot at a dilapidated bungalow in Goregoan (East). All the stars-Aamir, Salman, Raveena & Karisma Kapoor were non entities. I had an informal chat with Aamir Khan on the sets.
Raveena’s father Ravi Tandon was a well known director. He did films like-‘Khel Khel Mein’, ‘Anhonee’, ‘Nazrana’, ‘Majboor’, ‘Khud-daar’ and ‘Zindagi’. He started as an assistant to Subodh Mukherjee in “Love Marriage” (1959).
The actress married distributor Anil Thadani in 2004 after her break-up with Akshay Kumar.
