The recently committed gang- rape allegedly by few persons also involving women, in the garb of farmers, at Tikri Border in Haryana has caused a ripple in the silent pool of morality. It is similar to many other gang-rape incidents that took place in recent months.
According to the FIR the victim of the alleged gang-rape, a designer from West Bengal, who had accompanied the so called farmers( actually anti-social elements in the garb) to become part of the ‘Farmers Agitation’ all the way from Bengal to Tikri Border. The woman alleged that an attempt was also made at her in the train. She was later sexually abused in a tent at the site of agitation. She told her story to one of the ladies accompanying her who recorded her statement & informed the victim’s father, too.According to her message to her father Anil Kumar & Anup Singh were ‘bad elements’ & they had sexually abused her.On hearing from his daughter the gentleman got in touch with a doctor named Amit & requested him to seek help of Yogendra Yadav who was present thereat. The culprits abducted the woman when they came to know that they were exposed & took her to Hansi.Yogendra Yadav traced their location & warned them to leave her or face consequences. The culprits reportedly left the victim at Tikri & absconded. The woman later fell ill & was admitted to a hospital where she died on 30 April due to Covid19 complications.
Vijay Kumar , SHO City PS,briefing the mediapesons and confirmed that a case under section 366,342,376D,506,120-B of indian Penal Ciode has been registered at Bahadurgarh against six persons including Anil Malik,Anup Singh,Ankush Sanwan,Jagdish Brar & two women & SIT has been asked to investigate the case headed by a DSP.The father of the deceased victim told mediapersons that the matter was in the knowledge of all ‘Kissan leaders’ including Yogendra Yadav but was allowed to prolong without informing the police.Though KSM condemned the Kissan Social Army, the damage had already been done by the group members in garb of farmers. The attitude of various agitating unions speaks volumes of their callousness & remains under a cloud.
The need of the hour is to make changes in the centuries old law and the existing system comprising of both the police and the judiciary. In most rape incidents the attitude of the police remains callous or passive. They only come to senses when the matter is reported in the print & electronic media followed by strong public protest against the failure on part of the agencies responsible for the safety & security of the citizens. Stringent decontamination procedures ,it would be conceded, are need of the hour with security of the poor victim during the trial in a fast track court. There should also be no laxity on part of the law enforcing agencies including the judiciary.
